Meet the Artist
Because I can't stand to talk about myself in the third person, I'll keep this page informal and just talk a little about who I am, where I come from, and what I do.

    My Custom Mural Portfolio

This is me, circa fall 2009, between classes at Bloomington Art Center.  In this shot I'm working on a portrait of Cyrus, a beautiful jet black German Shepherd Dog.

The dogs I grew up with in Fort Myers, Florida, looked nothing like Cyrus.  Lots of black-and-tan hounds, for hunting deer in the Everglades, and a lot of Pit Bull and Pit mix guard dogs in my neighborhood.  Everyone had a pickup truck, and I still do; I needed to haul ladders, scaffolds and other equipment for my work as a custom mural painter.  I have a mural portfolio at traciethompson.com.  That was how I made a living from 2001 through 2008, and I still enjoy mural work.

There's much I still love about south Florida, but my degree and my heart are in fine art, and the Twin Cities offered a whole new world for me as an artist.  Moving here in summer of 2008 may have been the best thing I've ever done.

My work ranges very widely, from traditional paintings on canvas, to whimsical fairy-tale-style images, to the three-dimensional pieces I create from salvaged bits of wood, metal, and other lost or discarded artifacts.

The common theme in my art seems to be a sense of movement -- growth, the process of getting from one place to another, and the inherent hopefulness and energy involved in that motion.  Many of my works, especially the salvage pieces, have a theme of flight.  This isn't something I think very hard about before I begin something new; it simply comes out in the process.

Currently I am a drawing instructor at Bloomington Art Center and a drawing/painting instructor at Maple Grove Art Center.  I sell my work through Nicole Kappus Solheid at NKS Artsource, as well as independently through exhibits, referrals, and the internet.  I've shipped art as far afield as Australia.

As of June 2010 I have moved into a new studio space with the Old Town Artists, on the fourth floor of the ACVR Warehouse, 106 W. Water Street, St. Paul.  The Old Town Artists are part of the Saint Paul Art Crawl, and therefore, now so am I.
