Painted horses
Horses are a recurring theme of mine, and have been ever since I was about ten years old.  Powerful as they are, they are still prey animals and always alert for danger.  That dual nature reminds me very much of human beings, and makes the horse a compelling subject for me.

Uncle Oscar's Appaloosa. by Tracie Thompson, 2008. Oil on paper, 11 x 14".

This is the first painting in the Toy Horses series.  The Appaloosa is a Breyer model horse given to me by my great uncle, Oscar Lybass, when I was about three years old and he was ninety.  His side of the family has a strong heritage of horsemanship.

Lippizan.  Oil on canvas, 8 x 10."  Unframed; gallery wrapped edges.  February 2008.

The second in the Toy Horses series.  I've had this model (actually a "Pegasus" whose wings got lost) since I was about ten.

The Night Paddock.  Oil on canvas, 12 x 16".   2007.

My model for this painting was a recently captured mustang, photographed at midday in a dusty corral.  Obviously I didn't care about the real-life surroundings; I just liked this particular horse.  It's rare for a wild horse to look directly at a human like this, and I loved this one's expression of gentle wariness.

Tandem II.  Oil on canvas, 12 x 16",  2007.

This began with another magazine photo of captured mustangs, circling their dry, dusty pen in the heat of the day.  I was intrigued by the apparent bond between them, sticking together and looking out for one another, so I used their pose and changed everything else, even their coat colors.

The Green Leap.  Oil on canvas, 5 x 7", 2007.

Little Mare.  Oil on canvas, 5 x 7".   Sold

Tandem III.  Oil on canvas, 12 x 16", February 2008.

The pose for these horses came from another photo of mustangs.  I was drawn once more to the bond between the two, and to their alertness.  I changed everything else, from their setting to the color of their coats.
