Tracie Thompson, Artist

Making art from the ruins of everyday life
Since 1998 I've been making art from bits of found debris.  Each piece is necessarily unique, and the found objects suggest directions I might not take on my own.  For me, these works have to do with recovery, growth, and renewal; there's a strong theme of flight and forward movement, and I am currently concentrating on a series involving crows.

Dangerous Angel, by Tracie Thompson and an Unknown Collaborator, 2008. Found objects and oil paint. 16 x 15 x 2.5".

I found the Angel in the gutter on Fowler Avenue, near downtown Ft. Myers.  There was a welding shop close by, which must have been where it was created.  This piece is built with pieces from Lehigh, Punta Gorda, Moore Haven, and a town called Madrid in New Mexico.

Fighter Pilot,  by Tracie Thompson, 2007.  Found objects and oil paint, 16 x 10".  Sold

The toy airplane is one I'd had since I was five or six, back when I wanted to be a pilot -- but the work is more about moving forward than going backward into nostalgia.

Lost Kingdoms, by Tracie Thompson, 2006.  Found objects and oil paint.
Diptych, approx. 9.5 x 15"

That's me on the left, from a snapshot when I was four or five and playing in the dirt.  The right hand scene is the ruins of a hotel and spa at Hot Spring, North Carolina.

Hummingbird (Moving Away), by Tracie Thompson, 2007.  Found objects with metal leaf and oil paint, 22.5  x 19"

I made this when I knew I was going to leave Florida for Minneapolis; I think the combination of loss and growth makes it an interesting piece.

Zebra Longwing, by Tracie Thompson, 2007.  Found objects and oil paint, 19.5  x 7".

This one began when I found the black "frame" piece, which was part of my dad's old camera equipment.  The wood elements came from an abandoned, ruined sugar mill and the metal pieces from vacant areas of Lehigh Acres.

A Fragrant Poison (Shadow Woman II), by Tracie Thompson, 2007.  Found objects and oil paint, 15 x 12".

The first Shadow Woman piece was created and sold back in 2001.  I hadn't intended to make a second, but I found myself wanting to revisit it.  The "Shadow Woman" is, for me, a hazardous ideal of perfection.  The graceful vines on the right are actually briars.

Open Sky,  by Tracie Thompson, 2000.  Found objects, collage and oil, approx. 7"  x 10".   Sold

This was one of my first flight-themed salvage pieces.  The numbers came from a junked telephone pole in Tampa.  I've loved those mysterious metal numbers ever since I was five, with their implications of marking a particular place and purpose.
